Poem written for Ian
August 1st, 2011Below is a poem written by Lorna Stevens - a friend of Ian’s from Northern Ireland who held a small memorial service for Ian in July 2011.
Ian: The Return of the Artist
A dream of blue sky, golden sands
Two lovers holding one another
Flying through the air amidst translucent orbs,
Being carried towards the sea by the wind,
Like dandelion seed heads or scudding clouds,
Then gently descending into warm shallow water and lapping waves.
Salt air, whipped hair, a storm in July
Three sisters gather on grey sand facing grey water
To scatter some of Ian’s ashes in the Irish sea.
A faint scent of sacred incense in the dust.
Recalling the agony of his genius,
His ethereal beauty,
Narcissis,
Pale face of a statue,
Artisan’s hands,
A tortured man and his art,
His laughter at life’s absurdities.
Later, the visceral terrors of a broken body.
The spiritual succour of Art.
The enchantment of images and words.
Two women and two continents,
One at the beginning, one at the end.
Now completing the cycle,
Returning him to his source,
A small gathering of women,
Laughter and tears,
Paying homage to an impossible man.
Lorna Stevens-Drainsbay-Northern Ireland, 20th July 2011.
